OUR STORY

The story of Garden City Church is rooted in the bigger story of God’s pursuit of His people. We believe that just as God once walked with humanity in the Garden of Eden, He will one day dwell with us again in the future Garden City. We are called to live faithfully as God’s people in the present between the Garden of Eden and the Garden City to come, bringing a glimpse of heaven to earth in all that we do.

Garden City Church was planted out of a desire to bring hope to the people of Modderfontein & Alexandra that can only be found in Jesus. Though we are still in the early stages, meeting as Missional Communities, we know that God is already at work here, drawing people together in love and Harmony.

WHY MODDERFONTEIN

Modderfontein is more than just the place we meet—it’s the community we feel called to serve. With its rich history and beautiful surroundings, we believe this area is uniquely positioned for growth and renewal. Our hope is to see this vibrant community reflect God’s grace as we share His love with those around us.

OUR MISSION

Garden City Church Exists to be a Family of Diverse Disciples Rooted in Christ to Receive Life, Share Life & Give Life for His Glory.

Our heart bleeds to see lives renewed by the presence of Jesus and to see this community flourish through the life-giving power of Christ.

VISION

All Peoples Filled with the Life of Christ, Overflowing with the Love of Christ, Renewing the World by the Power of Christ.

We envision a church where every person can receive life, share life, and give life for God’s glory. As a church plant, we are just beginning this journey, but we are deeply committed to building a community in Modderfontein that overflows with the love of Christ and renews the world around us.

Receive Life

Our discipleship will revolve around helping members intentionally incorporate rhythms of scripture, prayer, sabbath, solitude, fasting, community, generosity and witness that all our members may know life in abundance.

Missional Communities: A diverse family seeking to live and thrive as disciples of Jesus is in the context of a community, growing in the gospel and on mission together.

Share Life

Give Life

As we receive life from Jesus, we’re called to give life to our communities—through kindness, justice, and sharing His love. Every small act of renewal reflects His greater plan.

OUR BELIEFS

We believe in the Triune God as revealed in Scripture: One, living, sovereign, and all-glorious God (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 6:16; Ps. 138:5). He exists eternally as one essence and three distinct persons: God the Father, the unbegotten source of all (1 Cor. 8:6); the Son, eternally begotten, not made (Jn. 1:1-3; Col. 1:15-16); and the Holy Spirit, proceeding eternally from the Father and the Son (Jn. 14:26; Acts 5:3-4). Each person is fully and equally God, worthy of worship and praise, and yet there is one God over all things.

We rejoice in the truth that all people are created in the image of God, uniquely reflecting His nature as divine image-bearers. As part of God’s creation, declared "very good," every human life is sacred and of immeasurable worth. (Gen. 1:26-31, 2:21-24).

We believe God, in His grace and kindness, revealed Himself to humanity so we may know Him. Through the 66 books of the Holy Scriptures, inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Pet. 1:20-21), He provided His perfect and Word for us without error (Matt. 5:17-18). The Bible is our ultimate authority, guiding us in all aspects of life for our good and His glory (Josh. 1:7-8).

In His Word, God reveals His character, His will, and His redemptive plan for the world through the gospel of Jesus Christ—His life, death, and resurrection (Lk 24:27). The Scriptures equip believers for ministry (2 Tim. 3:16-17), reveal salvation's path (Ps. 19:7), and assure us of the hope of Christ's return to restore all things (Rev. 21-22).

The Gospel is the good news of Jesus Christ: God become man to enter into the world and display His holiness in His perfect life, His sacrificial and substitutionary death, His miraculous and powerful resurrection and His glorious ascension to reign over all the Earth at the right-hand side of the Father who sent Him (1 Cor. 1:20, 2:14 15:2-3; Rom. 1:16, 3:23-26, 4:24-25; Mk. 16:19). The gospel is a broad term which describes God’s glorious, sovereign plan for human salvation and redemption, which God – in His infinite wisdom – had formulated from before the foundations of the Earth was laid. The gospel may seem like utter folly to the world, but it is indeed the power of God to those who are being saved (1 Cor. 1:18).

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, new people purchased and redeemed by the blood of Christ, daily conformed to the image of Christ by the indwelling of the Spirit that the church might become the very means by which the world is saturated with the presence of Christ as the waters cover the sea (Hab. 2:14). We believe the church, God’s people, are the ones through whom God is accomplishing His mission of proclaiming the gospel to every tribe, tongue and nation that they might be gathered into the family of God and equipped along with all the saints to participate in this great commission (Acts. 14:23)

We believe the Holy Spirit has been active throughout all eternity, participating in creation, awakening faith in the hearts of believers, performing wonders, empowering prophets, and inspiring scripture. In this new era, the Spirit's mission is to point to and glorify the crucified and risen Christ (John 16:13-14). The Holy Spirit dwells in believers, helping us understand God's love and reflect it through worship and adoration of Christ (Jn. 14:26, 15:26, 16:14).

We believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as displayed in the New Testament, remain active in the church today and will continue until Christ's return (1 Cor. 12:1-11). The Spirit empowers believers to preach the gospel, opens hearts to see and believe in Christ, and transforms lives (Acts 1:8; Rom. 15:18-19; 2 Cor. 3:18). He equips the church for her mission, making the Gospel irresistibly attractive to the regenerate heart (2 Cor. 4:4-6).

We eagerly await the visible, personal, and glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph 1:9-10; Col 1:15-19) who upon His second coming will conquer evil once and for all and judge the living and the dead. All brokenness, injustice, suffering, pain and strife will be set right and every tear will be wiped away as imperfection will give way to perfection (Rev 20:7-15). The just will be resurrected in their glorified bodies to receive their reward and dwell in the presence of God forever and ever. We believe that at this time King Jesus will finish His work of perfectly and fully renewing the Heavens, the Earth, and all that is within it in order that all creation may triumphantly and eternally proclaim the glories of our creator God who has made all things new (Rev 21:1-5).

We believe that baptism is an outward sign of an inward grace in which the believer publicly testifies to God, to the church, to oneself and the world, that he or she is now dead to self and alive in Christ—united with Him in His death and resurrection (Gal. 2:20-21). As such water baptism is only intended for the individual who has a genuine profession of faith in Christ Jesus (1 Pet. 3:21). We believe that the precedent within the New Testament is Baptism following conversion by immersion into water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:13-17).

We believe that the Lord’s supper is an outward sign of an inward grace in which the real spiritual presence of Christ is present as we partake in and are nourished by the bread and the cup with reverent gratitude for His sacrificial death on our behalf, self-examination of our lives, and hopeful expectation of His return in which He will come to make all things new (1 Cor 11:23-26).
